The Income Tax Department has launched a new functionality aimed at enhancing transparency and simplifying compliance for taxpayers. This latest update allows taxpayers to view and provide feedback on their Annual Information Statement (AIS) through the compliance portal on the e-filing website (www.incometax.gov.in).

The AIS provides a comprehensive overview of financial transactions that may have tax implications, compiled from multiple information sources. By offering a platform for taxpayers to comment on the accuracy of these transactions, the Income Tax Department is taking significant steps toward improving the taxpayer experience.

Key Features of the New AIS Functionality:

  1. Transparency and Feedback: Taxpayers can now furnish feedback on each transaction displayed in their AIS. This feedback is crucial for ensuring the accuracy of the information provided by the source. If a discrepancy is found, the feedback can prompt the source to correct the information through an automated process.

  2. Automated Confirmation: When feedback is shared, taxpayers can track the status of their feedback. They will know if the feedback has been shared with the source for confirmation, the date it was shared, the source's response date, and the nature of the response. This transparency ensures that any corrections are made promptly.

  3. Enhanced Services: This new functionality is part of the department's broader initiative to improve compliance and enhance taxpayer services, making it easier for taxpayers to manage their financial information accurately.

What is AIS?

The AIS is an extension of the Form 26AS, providing more detailed financial information. While Form 26AS covers property purchases, high-value investments, and TDS/TCS transactions, AIS goes further by including details such as savings account interest, dividends, rent received, transactions of securities/immovable properties, foreign remittances, interest on deposits, and GST turnover. Additionally, AIS offers an option for taxpayers to provide feedback on the reported transactions and includes transaction aggregation at the information source level in the Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS).

With these enhancements, the Income Tax Department aims to make tax filing more transparent, accurate, and user-friendly, ensuring a smoother experience for all taxpayers.
