The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a crucial warning, urging users to be cautious of WhatsApp calls originating from foreign numbers, specifically those with +92 codes. This alert comes in response to a surge in fraudulent calls that impersonate government officials, threatening individuals with mobile number disconnection or implicating them in illegal activities.
According to reports, cyber criminals are using these calls to intimidate and extract personal information, leading to cyber-crimes and financial frauds. The DoT emphasizes that it does not authorize anyone to make such calls and advises people to remain vigilant and avoid sharing any information if they receive such calls.
To combat this threat, the DoT has introduced the 'Chakshu-Report Suspected Fraud Communications' facility on the Sanchar Saathi portal, enabling citizens to report fraudulent communications promptly. This proactive reporting assists in preventing telecom resource misuse for cyber-crimes and financial frauds.
Additionally, individuals can utilize the 'Know Your Mobile Connections' feature on the Sanchar Saathi portal to verify mobile connections under their name and report any unauthorized or unnecessary connections.
In case of becoming a victim of cyber-crime or financial fraud, the DoT urges citizens to report incidents to the cyber-crime helpline number 1930 or www.cybercrime.gov.in.
Amit Relan, co-founder and CEO of mFilterIt, commends these initiatives as crucial steps in raising awareness and preventing mobile connection misuse. He emphasizes the importance of vigilance and collaboration with organizations like banks to detect and counter fraudulent activities effectively.
Earlier this year, the DoT's proactive measures led to the prohibition of over 1,500 phone lines associated with cybercrimes and potential threats. These efforts signify a proactive approach to safeguard telecommunication resources amidst rising instances of financial deception.
Stay informed, stay cautious, and report any suspicious activities to ensure a safer digital environment.
